Each year the choice of the theme of Scrittorincittà is something that takes time and discussing. The desire is to make sure that the chosen subject acts as a useful compass to the public of the Cuneo event to reflect on our period. Therefore, a sufficiently clear and intense theme is needed, to correspond with a prospective, to a visual corner from which to try and observe the world. In times in which, in spite of the bravery and trust in the face of real change, it is necessary to take cognizance of the obscurity we are going through - an ethical, social and cultural obscurity that has fallen into violence, reforming it, into our same idea of human - to decide on declining the meetings of Scrittorincittà starting from Lights in the dark (Luci nel buio) seemed to us to be a way of recognizing the dense darkness of these years without however giving in to the temptation of an inert abandon to cynicism and nihilism. The fact that this darkness is studded with lights describes the existence, even if it is still punctiform, of exceptions and alternatives, and suggests to us the importance of persisting in working on glows, giving them even more intensity and burning capacity. Lights in the dark in brief, also synthesizes something that regards our experience both on a metaphorical level as on a physical one. Because intelligence, civil bravery, political commitment and scientific research are all “lights in the dark”. The stars in sidereal space and those that contrast with the darkness of common places and of prejudice are lights. Dignity, satire, memory and imagination are lights; visionary age is light. Finally, intuition is light that is to say that extraordinary short circuit that gives rise to narrative and linguistic invention: in one word, literature.
